Students' Rights

Do you know your rights as a student at the University of Alberta?

Students' rights are spread across any number of University policies and documents, so they can be hard to find. That's why we worked for years to get the University to publish the Charter of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

The Charter points you to the official policy documents that explain your rights in any number of situations. It should help you understand procedural fairness and how to appeal unfair decisions. It should also help you to make complaints, navigate disciplinary processes, and avoid choices that can put you and others at risk.

How did we get here?

In Fall 2017, we published a research project that compared students' rights at the University of Alberta with other Canadian universities.

In Winter 2018, we followed up with a comprehensive survey report that explored students' awareness of their rights and the policies that explain them.

In Summer and Fall 2019, we reexamined and repackaged our previous data while shepherding the draft Charter through innumerable committees and working groups. At the University's request, we took the lead in the drafting process.

In Winter 2020, the University finally approved the Charter.
