Students' Union Elections
Important announcement
The 2024/25 General Election and Council Election final results have been officially ratified by your Students' Council now that all appeals have been resolved. Students use a ranked ballot system to select all positions in the Executive, Board of Governors Representative, Students' Council, and GFC elections. Voters rank candidates in order of preference, so as many students as possible get a representative they voted for, though not necessarily their first choice.
This year, a VP Academic candidate was disqualified during voting. If a student listed that candidate as the first choice on their ballot, ranked voting means their ballot automatically counted toward their preferred second choice (either the other candidate, or None Of The Above). If the student did not select a preferred second choice, their vote for that race was void. You can learn more about ranked voting here or watch our quick and easy explainer video.
Elections
There are typically three elections throughout the year:
1. Fall By-Election
- Election to fill vacancies on Students' Council and the General Faculties Council.
- Occurs during the first week of October each year.
2. Students' Union General Election
- Election to fill the President, Vice Presidents, and Board of Governors representative positions.
- Plebiscite and/or Referenda questions, if any, occur during this election.
- Occurs during the first week of March each year.
3. Students' Council (SC)/General Faculties Council (GFC) Elections
- Election of councillors from the various faculties to either Students' Council or the General Faculties Council.
- Faculty Association (FA) elections are encouraged to participate.
- Occurs during third week in March each year.
Vacancy petitions are used to fill vacancies between elections.

Running your FA or student group election with the UASU system
If you are planning on running your FA or student group election with the UASU system, what the Elections Team will need from you is:

Our team will add them into the excel sheet which is used to communicate with the IT team, and we will double check with you afterwards that all is correct.
Our team will not be checking if a candidate is eligible to run and that will be more your role and how it corresponds to your constitution.
You have 2 options of when you can submit your candidates' information by:
Option #1: Submit your information by February 28. Election dates would be March 6-7
Option #2: Submit your information by March 13. Election dates would be March 20-21

Bodies Elected by Students' Union Members
- President: Acts as the primary spokesperson for the Students’ Union.
- VP Academic: Advocates for students' interests within the University community and beyond.
- VP External: Responsible for Students' Union government and community relations.
- VP Operations and Finance: Responsible for managing the SU's $10 million budget.
- VP Student Life: Responsible for university-related non-academic issues.
2. Undergraduate Board of Governors Representative
Acts as a voice for the undergraduate student body on the University of Alberta Board of Governors, the ultimate decision making authority of the university. This student works in coordination with the SU President (another BoG member) and also sits as a voting member of the SU Students' Council.
The highest governing body of the Students' Union. This council has ultimate decision-making authority over all aspects of the organization.
The academic legislative body of the University of Alberta. This council deals with all academic matters and student affairs issues (as set out in the Alberta Post-Secondary Learning Act). It is the highest level at which academic decisions are made, and is chaired by the President of the University of Alberta.
Plebiscites and Referenda
Plebiscites and referenda can either be initiated by SU Students' Council or by individual SU members. For more information, please visit Plebiscites and Referenda.
APIRG Elections
After casting your ballot in the SU General Election, you will have the option to vote in the APIRG Board Elections. APIRG is a student-run, student-funded, non-profit organization dedicated to research, education, advocacy, and action in the public interest.

Élections
Il y a généralement trois élections au cours de l'année :
1. Élection partielle d'automne
- Élection visant à remplir les postes vacants du Conseil étudiant et du Conseil des facultés générales.
- A lieu au cours de la première semaine d'octobre de chaque année.
2. Élection du Comité exécutif de l’Union étudiante (SU)/Représentant du conseil d'administration des gouverneurs du premier cycle universitaire
- Élection visant à occuper les postes de président, de vice-présidents et de représentants du conseil d'administration (BoG) des gouverneurs.
- Les questions du plébiscite et/ou du référendum, s'il y en a, sont soulevés pendant cette élection.
- A lieu au cours de la première semaine de mars de chaque année.
3. Élections du Conseil étudiante (SC) et du Conseil facultés générales (GFC)
- Élection des conseillers des différentes facultés au Conseil étudiant ou au Conseil facultés générales.
- Les élections de l’Association Faculté (FA) sont encouragées à participer.
- A lieu la troisième semaine de mars de chaque année.
Les pétitions de vacance sont utilisées pour pourvoir les postes vacants entre les élections.

Organes élus par les membres de l’Union étudiante (SU)
- Président : Agit comme le principal porte-parole de l'Union des étudiants.
- VP Académique : Un défenseur des intérêts des étudiants au sein de la communauté universitaire et au-delà.
- VP Externe : Responsable du gouvernement de l'Union étudiante (SU) et des relations communautaires.
- VP Opérations et finances : Responsable de la gestion du budget de la SU de 10 millions de dollars.
- VP Vie étudiante : Responsable des problèmes non académiques concernant l'université.
**2. Représentant du conseil d'administration des gouverneurs du premier cycle universitaire
Agit en tant qu'une voix pour l'organe étudiant de premier cycle au sein du conseil d'administration albertain des gouverneurs de l'Université de l'Alberta, l'autorité de pouvoir de décision ultime de l'université. Cet étudiant travaille en coordination avec le président de la SU (un autre membre du conseil d'administration des gouverneurs) et siège également en tant que membre votant du Conseil étudiante de la SU.
L'organe directeur suprême de l'Union étudiante (SU). Ce conseil a le pouvoir de décision ultime sur tous les aspects de l'organisation.
L'organe législatif académique de l'Université de l'Alberta. Ce conseil traite de toutes les questions relatives aux matières académiques et aux affaires étudiantes (tel que dans la loi sur l'enseignement post-secondaire de l'Alberta). Il est le plus haut niveau auquel les décisions académiques sont faites et sont présidés par le président de l'Université de l'Alberta.
Plébiscites et référendums

Élections de l'APIRG
Après avoir rempli votre bulletin lors de l'élection générale de la SU, vous aurez la possibilité de voter pour l'élection du conseil d'administration de l'APIRG. APIRG est une organisation sans but lucratif, gérée et financée par les étudiants, qui se consacre à la recherche, à l'éducation, à la plaidoirie et à l'action dans l'intérêt public.
